Pick one subject at a time

  • If you’re feeling stuck, just start with Math or Language Arts. These subjects usually give you the clearest idea of fit.
  • Ask yourself:
    • Can my child read full paragraphs and answer questions?
      • New readers should begin with Learn to Read courses (Levels A-C).
      • Stronger readers can start with Reading Comprehension or Foundations in Language Arts for middle school and high school.
    • Are they already doing multiplication and division confidently?
      • If your child is not yet multiplying/dividing, start around Math Level B or C.
      • Students who are familiar with multiplication and division might be ready for Math Level D or E.
  • Once you have a rough level in mind, head to your Curriculum tab and:
    • Click “Add or Remove Courses” in a subject
    • Click on a course name
    • Click on a unit and then a lesson
    • Use “Preview” to watch teaching videos or view the printable PDFs
  • Ask yourself these questions:
    • Can my child do this work independently?
    • Can my child explain this content to me?
    • Can my child score at least 70% on this assessment?
  • You can always remove a course later and try a different one! Any work your child does will be saved.

Preview before assigning

  •  It’s totally okay to start a little below what you think might be right. Our system is mastery-based:
    • Students can move up at any time
    • There’s no visible grade level on the student side
  • One strategy is to assign only the assessments from a lower level. Then, have your child complete them.
    • If the content has been mastered, and your child scores well (on average, above 80%) you can keep going!
    • Once your child hits a topic that hasn’t been mastered, and receives a lower score, this may indicate where their learning should begin! In your parent portal, you can then assign all lesson components from that point forward!
    • Once your child starts completing work in any course, all of their progress will be saved! So, you can adjust without losing any of your child’s work: Too hard? Unassign and reassign a lower course.  Too easy? Unassign and assign a higher level.
